Historical Evolution

Historical Development

1972 The Department of Chemical Engineering was established, initially named the "Professional Company." It was one of the earliest departments founded at the university.

1974 The Department of Chemical Engineering began enrolling students, offering two majors: Inorganic Chemical Engineering and Organic Chemical Engineering.

1977 The Department of Chemical Engineering added a Pharmaceutical Chemistry major and commenced undergraduate enrollment across all three majors.

1980 The Department of Chemical Engineering introduced a Chemical Process Technology major (associate degree program).

1985 The Department of Chemical Engineering added a Fine Chemical Engineering major.

1992 The department was reorganized to offer two majors: Chemical Engineering and Chemical Process Technology. The Department of Fine Chemical Engineering was established, offering the following majors: Fine Chemical Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Formulation, Industrial Analysis, and Industrial Analysis (associate degree).

1998 Following departmental restructuring, the Fine Chemical Engineering, Industrial Analysis, and Industrial Analysis (associate degree) programs from the former Department of Fine Chemical Engineering were transferred to the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Polymer Materials and Engineering program, among others, formed the Department of Materials. The Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Formulation programs formed the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering added an Environmental Engineering major (transferred to the Department of Environmental Engineering in 2000).

2000 The Department of Chemical Engineering introduced a Biotechnology major.

2003 The Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering merged to form the School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy.

2013 An Energy Chemical Engineering major was added.

2014 Following institutional restructuring, the School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy offered undergraduate programs in Chemical Engineering and Technology (excluding the Industrial Analysis specialization), Energy Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Food Science and Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Formulation. The former Chemical Engineering and Technology (Industrial Analysis specialization) and Applied Chemistry programs were transferred to the School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering.

2017 Following another institutional restructuring, the School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy offered undergraduate programs in Chemical Engineering and Technology, Energy Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Formulation. The former Biotechnology, Food Science and Engineering, and Biological Technology programs were transferred to the School of Environmental Ecology and Biological Engineering.
