(Reported by Huang Yuanxin and Lin Xiao) From December 15 to 16, the 2025 International Conference on Green Chemistry and New Energy was successfully convened at the Liufang Campus. Jointly hosted by Wuhan Institute of Technology, the National Key Laboratory for Green and Efficient Development of Phosphate Ores and Associated Resources and Hubei Three Gorges Laboratory. The conference was organized by School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy, with support from key laboratories including the Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Process of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center for Phosphorus Resource Development of the Ministry of Education, and the Hubei Key Laboratory of Novel Reactors and Green Chemical Technology. The event attracted over 100 experts, scholars, industry leaders, and young researchers from domestic and foreign in the fields of green chemistry and new energy.

Zhang Yanduo, President of Wuhan Institute of Technology (hereinafter, WIT),  delivered the opening address, warmly welcoming participants and expressing gratitude to supporters. He highlighted WIT’s commitment to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Emphasizing the global shift toward green, low-carbon energy systems, President Zhang stressed that green chemistry and new energy are pivotal to achieving China’s "dual-carbon" goals. He expressed hope that the conference would serve as a catalyst for groundbreaking ideas and global perspectives in advancing modern chemical and energy systems.

Renowned experts around the world participated in the opening ceremony, including: Canadian Royal Society of Sciences/ Engineering Academician, Professor Zeng Hongbo  (Lifelong Professor at the University of Alberta), Professor Frederik Ronsse from Ghent University in Belgium, Professor Hirotomo Nishihara from Tohoku University in Japan, Professor Yong Sik Ok from Korea University, Professor Jadran Vrabec from the Technical University of Berlin in Germany, Chief Scientist Zou Xuejun from FPInnovations, Professor Qian Yu from South China University of Technology, Director Chi Ruan of Hubei Three Gorges Laboratory, Researcher Ge Wei from the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Hao Jingcheng from Shandong University, Professor Qiu Jieshan from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and other specially invited guests and experts attended the opening ceremony.

Xiong Qingang, dean of the School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a comprehensive introduction to the school. He highlighted its historical development, professional construction, faculty expertise, and research achievements, showcasing the institution’s strengths and contributions to the fields of green chemistry and new energy. Additionally, Dean Xiong extended invitations to experts, scholars, government agencies, and enterprises to collaborate on joint research initiatives and innovation-driven projects.

The main venue featured 12 plenary sessions covering cutting-edge topics such as: commercialization of biochar, coal-based functional materials, multicomponent diffusion mechanisms, simulation of multiphase flow reactors, sustainable energy solutions, surface-active agent industrialization, catalytic conversion of carbon-based small molecules, biofuel production from biomass, applications of organic porous materials.

Four parallel sessions-Sustainable Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Resource Chemical Engineering and Solid Waste Treatment, New Energy and Advanced Energy Materials, and Green Pharmaceutical Chemical Engineering-hosted 32 invited talks and 44 oral presentations, fostering dynamic discussions and knowledge exchange.

Yu Faquan, vice president of WIT, delivered closing remarks, thanking organizers, participants, and staff for their dedication. He emphasized that the conference marks a starting point for deeper collaboration, pledging continued efforts to build innovation platforms, assemble research teams, and cultivate top-tier talents to tackle global energy and environmental challenges.

Twelve outstanding presentations were recognized, including awards for: Wang Shuang (Hubei University), Zhu Shiyun (Hubei University of Technology), Sun Kangrui (Tianjin Institute of Seawater Desalination and Comprehensive Utilization), Zhang Bingzhen (Wuhan University), Yang Wu (South China University of Technology), and Li Gexian, Yu Yue, Wang Xiang, Diao Yuting (Wuhan Institute of Technology) and so on.

The conference provided a vibrant platform for academic dialogue, bridging theory and practice to drive industrial innovation. Participants hailed the event as a resounding success and expressed eagerness to reconvene next year to further advance breakthrough in green chemistry and new energy. (Reviewed by Xiong Qingang and Yu Xianglin)
